Geographical fun fact: the Red River is the only river in North America that flows north.
There are many different types of wildlife in our area: Wild turkeys, deer, skunks (jealous?), and my personal favorite…the Bald Eagle.
God created an amazing creature when He created the Bald Eagle.
Did you know that if a Bald Eagle could read, it could read the newspaper 100 yards away? That's amazing. I learned that and a host of totally useful information about eagles at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN a number of years ago on a little family vacation and I've been stuck with my eyes scanning the sky ever since!
So, the other day, I was driving on a familiar road to pick my kids up from school. I was watching the road, but also scanning the sky as I often do when I saw it.
The unmistakable flight of an eagle.
The way they soar through the air.
The non-hurried rate at which they move their wings.
Their graceful movement, no matter how the wind blows.
This unmistakable, majestic eagle made me think about God.
The book of Exodus is about God providing a way out for His people, the Israelites, who had been oppressed in Egypt for over 400 years. In studying this book, I have seen the unmistakable movement of God in visible and invisible ways - God's movement of the human heart.
God moved and a man named Moses stepped out in faith and onto the scene.
God moved and the Israelites trusted Moses to lead them.
God moved and the Egyptians recognized the unmistakable movement of the God of heaven and earth.
God moved and plagues of blood, gnats, flies, frogs, hail, sores, death of livestock, locusts, darkness and even death pointed others to Himself, the One True God.
When God moves, you know it.
Countless times throughout the story of Israel God reveals the purpose for His movement.
"Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians."
"so that you may know there is no one like the LORD our God."
God moves in these unmistakable ways for one reason and one reason only: "so that you may know there is no one like the Lord our God!"
Not just to know it, like in your brain, but to know it…in your heart.
A couple of weeks ago, I had the amazing privilege of going around to each of the Kindergarten thru 6th grade classes at our school (a private Christian school) and sharing the gospel there with our principal.
I was reminded that day of the power of God. `
God can part the Red (Reed) Sea.
God can cause a fish to have enough money to pay taxes.
But the most amazing work of God today, is to turn the hearts of people toward Himself.
To turn my heart and your heart to Him…the One True God.
Anything or anyone else we turn our hearts to is a band-aid fix; not God, He is an eternal fix.
This work of God is unmistakable and it's something only He can do.
One of my all-time favorite passages of scripture is Isaiah 40:28-31
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
They will run and not grow weary,
They will walk and not be faint.
It's like Isaiah is saying emphatically:
"haven't you heard this yet?
The Lord is the everlasting God…you NEED Him!
His movement in your life will be unmistakable, unmatchable, unbelievable!
Who else can give you strength when you are tired?
Who else can understand all the things you don't understand?
Who else can give power when you don't feel like you can make another move?"
He goes on to say, "Want to experience the unmistakable movement of God?
Put your hope in the LORD.
His unmistakable movement is like that of an eagle.
Others will recognize His movement in your life and God will be known.
Where has God's movement been unmistakable in your life?
Sometimes we don't see it until we take time and look back on our life, so go ahead…look back.
Have you thanked Him?
One the greatest, most retold moves of God in the Old Testament is the parting of the Red Sea. Psalmists and other writers tell of it over and over again.
Are you telling your story of God's unmistakable movement to those around you?
It might be that God wants to use your story to turn the hearts of people toward Himself.
The Best UNMISTAKABLE MOVE
God made an Unmistakable move for you and me when He sacrificed His One and Only Son on the cross. On the cross, Jesus took the punishment for your sin and my sin, so we wouldn't have to endure that kind of punishment. Not only did God sacrifice His son, but 3 days later He made another Unmistakable Move; the Power of God raised Jesus from the dead. In doing so, He proved that death did not have the final word in this life. He does.
When we place our trust in Jesus (his life, death and resurrection), death does not have the last word in our lives. God does. And that word is REDEEMED.
If you can think of no other Unmistakable story to tell than this one…you have the BEST one to tell!
If this isn't your story, maybe today is the day you step out and put your trust in God. He knows you, He loves you and it's His desire that you turn to Him...today is a great day to put your hope in Him.
Here's my story…
I want to live my life focusing on the unmistakable movement of God.
I want to recount over and over again how I saw God move today.
I want to tell people about God's movement; not my disappointments.
I want to focus on what God is doing; not on what I wish He would do.
What can you add to this list?
